What is this service?

Supporting unpaid family Carers aged over 18 looking after somebody who needs help with their day-to-day life, because of: a long-term illness, a disability, mental health problems or substance misuse. Available to Carers living within the Essex County Council Local Authority Area or Carers who are looking after somebody who lives within this area


The Action for Family Carers Adult Carer support team provide??
• Home visits to talk about the challenges you face and provide one-to-one emotional support
• Information, advice & guidance & support to access:
• Information on how to access a break
• Carers Rights under the new Care Act 2014
• Financial Benefits and other entitlements
• Information on local support and services available
• Power(s) of Attorney, Deputyship and explaining Mental Capacity
• How to access to Emergency Respite in Crisis Situations
• Crisis and contingency planning
• Help to access services, devices and equipment to assist in your caring role
• Support to access small Grant Funding Opportunities
• Free Counselling service
• Peer Support groups
• Training in first aid, manual handling, dealing with challenging behaviour, coping with stress, confidence building and Health and Wellbeing Days
• Support to have your voice heard on important issues
• Free ?Carer Awareness? training for professionals


The Adult Carers Support in the Community Service is part of Supporting Carers in Essex Supporting Carers in Essex is a group of registered charities, led by Action for Family Carers, working together to support unpaid carers of all ages across Essex. It provides a single contact point for carers anywhere in the county. Other services on offer to carers across Essex include;
• Hospital Support in all acute hospitals in Essex ? practical and emotional support when the person you care for is admitted to hospital
• One-to-one support for Young Carers aged 11 ? 18 years old within secondary schools
• One-to-one support and personal development for Young Adult Carers aged 16 ? 24 years old.
• Carers of people at end of life (in partnership with Macmillan ? when the person you care for has a terminal diagnosis or is approaching the end of their life.
• Carers Rapid Response Service - offering respite breaks for carers experiencing exceptional difficulties or waiting to have a carer?s assessment.

It is important to support carers because:
• A caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression
• Carer breakdown can result when carers do not feel prepared or sufficiently supported
• Each Carer supported to continue caring could save the state ?18,473 annually (Carers Trust/University of Leeds)
